Low tide saves four people stranded in the Torres Strait

Four people walked almost a kilometre along a reef at low tide to be rescued after their boat capsized in the Torres Strait.

Three men, aged 51, 38 and 21, and a 16-year-old boy, abandoned their boat in waters near Thursday Island after it capsized on Sunday afternoon.

The group had been sailing from Cape York to their home on Moa Island in the Torres Strait, when they stopped to refuel just after 5.30pm.

«During the process the vessel was swamped and then flipped over,» a police spokesman said.
