Sydney in a smoky haze after state-wide hazard reduction burns

Planned hazard reduction burns left Sydney with a smoky scent and a visible haze on Monday morning, with parts of the city’s west reaching dangerous air quality levels.

Environment NSW’s air quality index said that Liverpool’s air was «hazardous» during Monday morning — the worst possible rating. According to the department, this rating means that groups who are sensitive to smoke should avoid all outdoor activities, and everyone else should cut back or reschedule their time outside.

Other parts of western Sydney — Chullora, Parramatta, Camden and Campbelltown — were rated as either «poor» or «very poor».

«The smoke could hang around quite a bit today — this is normal, it can happen when there’s lots of hazard reduction,» said Stephen Stefanac, a meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology.
