While the highly-anticipated bout between Whittaker and Gastelum in Melbourne has now been scrapped, the co-main event between New Zealand excitement machine Israel Adesanya and Brazil’s living legend Anderson Silva will now take centre stage.
The hype surrounding the Adesanya-Silva fight has been arguably just as big as the Whittaker-Gastelum showdown, if not bigger.
Adesanya is undefeated from 15 fights in mixed martial arts, and won his first four fights in the UFC last year, including three victories that were adjudged performance of the night.
Meanwhile, Silva is regarded widely as the greatest MMA fighter of all time. He holds the record for the longest title reign in UFC history — 2457 days as middleweight champion, including 10 title defences.
Extra weight was added to the Adesanya-Silva fight when UFC president Dana White announced on Friday that it would be for the No.1 middleweight contender spot.
The new co-main is the lightweight matchup between Lando Vannata and Marcos Mariano.
Due to change in the main event, customers may request a full refund of their purchased tickets at the point of sale.
